ABF drivers put safety and compassion into action
When ABF Freight drivers hit the road, they provide exceptional service to customers and often help those in need. Each year, we’re proud to see our drivers named to the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) list of Highway Angels.
The TCA Highway Angel program began in 1997 and honors professional drivers who show courage and courtesy while driving North America’s roadways. Here are just a few of the many moments that show why ABF drivers are some of the safest on the road — and why they’ve earned this well-deserved recognition:

In Cincinnati, Ohio, ABF road driver Tommy Burgoon saw a head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver and a semi-truck. Acting quickly, Tommy extinguished flames around the trapped motorist, cut the seatbelt and helped first responders bring the injured driver to safety.
While driving southbound near Lakehead, California, ABF road driver Matt Harris spotted flames from a crashed tractor-trailer. He grabbed the fire extinguisher from his truck and worked to suppress the fire until emergency crews arrived.
ABF city driver Mark Campbell came upon a collision involving a pickup and an overturned dump truck in Kentucky and worked with others who stopped to get the driver to safety.
While traveling northbound in Virginia, ABF road driver Stan Combs noticed sparks flying from a pickup truck ahead. He flashed his lights to alert the driver just moments before the truck lost a wheel and skidded to the roadside. Stan pulled over to check on the passengers and ensure the vehicle hadn’t caught fire.
When a pickup truck pulling a trailer lost control and flipped in Greensboro, North Carolina, ABF city driver Tim Akins didn’t hesitate. He stopped immediately, cut through the airbags and helped free two trapped passengers from the wreckage.
While traveling the Overseas Highway, ABF city driver Flavio Ortega De Cespedes noticed a vehicle fire. He pulled over, grabbed the fire extinguisher from his truck and helped suppress the flames until emergency crews arrived.
When a tractor-trailer flipped on a curve in Jacksonville, Florida, ABF city driver David Cyr was among the first to respond. He quickly assessed the scene, checked for hazards and climbed down an embankment to reach the trapped motorist. David helped the driver out of the wreckage and stayed with him until emergency crews arrived.
ABF road driver Luis Davila stepped in to protect an elderly man swerving down a highway on a motorized scooter. Acting quickly, Luis used his truck’s flashers to shield the man from traffic and stayed close until help arrived.
ABF road driver Mike Kimball courageously responded to a multi-semi crash in Missouri. Arriving moments after impact, Mike grabbed the fire extinguisher from his truck and worked alongside fellow drivers to battle flames and comfort a trapped motorist.
After witnessing a rollover collision, ABF road driver Randy Fisher rushed to assist, safely removing an injured driver from an overturned vehicle and helping stabilize the scene until emergency crews arrived.
ABF road driver Joshua Tyler jumped into action during a roadside emergency near the Kansas and Missouri state line. Spotting flames beneath a disabled vehicle, he quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher from his truck, helped the occupants to safety and directed traffic until first responders arrived.
When a crash unfolded on a Kansas highway, ABF road driver Travis Braun pulled over, forced open a damaged vehicle door and helped rescue an unconscious woman from danger.
Congratulations to these amazing drivers!
Their actions reflect the care and responsibility ABF drivers bring to the road every day. Thank you for representing our values so powerfully!
